Christina M. Hartman Condemns Senate GOP Tax Bill, Calls on Rep. Lloyd Smucker to Oppose Bill in Conference
Today, Christina Hartman condemned the GOP’s ill-advised tax cut scheme and called on Senator Pat Toomey and Rep. Lloyd Smucker to oppose the bill in conference. Ms. Hartman released this statement:
“Time and again, independent analyses have shown that this tax bill leaves America’s middle class out in the cold. In our district alone, middle-class families will get tax hikes so that Senator Pat Toomey and Rep. Lloyd Smucker can slash taxes for the richest 1% and huge corporations.
From the beginning of this misguided adventure, Democrats have called for transparent, thoughtful legislation that simplifies the tax code, doesn’t further increase the national debt, and gives tax cuts to those who need it most—the middle class and small businesses, not corporations and the 1%.
Republicans in Washington have illustrated clearly that the GOP is more interested in giving handouts to wealthy corporations than in putting money back into the pockets of hard-working Americans. And as the experts have overwhelmingly concluded, Senator Toomey’s and Rep. Smucker’s pursuit to satisfy their mega-donors will have long-term negative consequences for Pennsylvania.
Senator Toomey and Rep. Smucker, your votes for this travesty are unacceptable. The people of PA-16 deserve better, and today I call on you both to remember those who sent you to Washington and oppose this slapdash thievery.”
