ormer Secretary of State Madeleine Albright endorsed Democratic congressional hopeful Christina Hartman and will campaign with her in Lancaster sometime before the election, Hartman’s campaign announced.

Hartman, a consultant to nonprofits from Lancaster, is competing with Republican state Sen. Lloyd Smucker and Libertarian Shawn House for the 16th Congressional District seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts since 1997.

Hartman spent three years working for the National Democratic Institute, a group chaired by Albright that works to increase the effectiveness of democratic institutions in developing countries.

“Christina has built a career negotiating and advocating for human rights around the globe,” Albright said in a statement. “For nearly two decades she has fought for freedom and democracy in difficult political environments from South Sudan to Afghanistan.”

Albright, who served as the nation’s first female chief diplomat from 1997 to 2001, campaigned across Pennsylvania for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton this past Saturday. She will appear with Hartman in Lancaster in November.
